A fact not mentioned in the linked article: Manchester’s first book was an entertaining biography of H.L. Mencken, “Disturber of the Peace: The Life of H.L. Mencken.” I recall it as being a good read, although Terry Teachout’s much more recent biography is better, in my opinion.
Manchester really hit his stride with The Glory and the Dream. I never could figure why it went out of print.
