Last year, a bunch of their stations in North Carolina (and a few other states, I believe) were urging listeners to run bicyclists off the road. For discipline, they had to run commercials telling bicyclists to be safe(!) and give way to cars. Bleh!

Dearest Ninja: Unfortunately, when it comes to obscenity, as seen with the Janet Nipplegate affair, the FCC will only investigate things that involve sexual functions. (See 182 U.S. Code Section 1461. Howard Stern, for example, was nailed through that conduit.) Things like this are par for the course on American radio, skating under the radar of both current indecency and slander laws.

So you're left with a brain-dead media failing to pick up on this story and the only mobilization which will work: making the advertisers, the listeners, and the broadcasters aware of the hate they're supporting. Which might be a good thing. Because if we can't fight through the government conduits, we can find creative ways to tighten the economic noose, oddly enough in the same way that the other side has exploited it. After all, money DOES talk.

I am completely shocked and outraged at this conversation. I cannot believe that listeners support and laugh at this type of outright racist, violent, putrid talk. Not to mention this man's complete disregard for another human being.

I have to say that I was absolutely shocked when I listened to the clip. I cannot believe that some people find this kind of thing funny. They should not be encouraging these racist ideas and spreading them throughout society. I am definitely going to write to the station and I encourage others to do so as well.

The smart way to deal with this is to contact the advertisers of the program and publicize the relationship of the advertisers with this ignorant bullshit.

Someon should actually teach that person that its their countrymen themselves who outsource the work here and they are at fault, not us. We don't intend anything bad for your citizens, and we are awarded work on our own merit.

Just to correct the transcript, the woman's name sounds like Tina (not Steena). Tina is a pretty typical Punjabi name, and a lot of these call centers are in Gurgaon, next to New Delhi, which has a large Punjabi population.

Thanks for bringing it to the notice of people world wide. But the fact of the matter is that Indians working in the call centres are subject to such racial abuse every now and then. People , lets make things clear it ain't jus the cheap labour but also the effeciency of the work force which compels companies to outsource. No company would be outsourcing if the quality of service provided by india was poor. So rather than abusing call centre employees why dont citizens compete through better services.
Though such an act is regrettable, I do not see it lessening in future. The US govt must play a more pro-active role and educate people about out sourcing.I should also bring it to the notice of readers that out sourcing has infact created jobs in UK & USA. At last count it was 20,000 in UK and 140,000 in USA and the number will keep on rising. These jobs however would require to sharpen their skills. The rule is very clear and simple: SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST. And I am sure that americans are good at what ever they do. So why not move on and look at the brighter side of things.

Business out sourcing is an art of communication technology and you shopuld not be worried about it as one day Mr.Star can also be contracted by a station in India or far east and will be broadcated to its listeners live.

The underlying point is that US government should reserve a good percent of it budget to improve the qualities of its citizens instead of improving the quality of life of Iraqis by invading their country killing 100 times more people than what Saddam may have killed in his regime and 10 more years he would have been in power.

I wont consder the DJ stunt as a response of general US populace. I just read an apology from the station manager in some associated news site who stopped short of cancelling the DJ`s assignment or asking them to apologise. Condoning the act of DJ and dissociating the radio station from it looks like the manager is trying to save him from the burnt of FCC fine. What would have been fitting would be to throw the DJ`s out considering repititive violation of racist abuse on radio.
Just to let American folks know, a typical Indian call centers employees earn in the bracket of $300 - $ 400 per month. Paltry as it may sound, it is doing wonders to the concerned folks.
The age profile is predominantly young english speaking college going students and in lesser number housewives looking at ways to increase family income.
This bracket never had any steady source of income before. They work normally when it is day in the US, which is night time in India. So, comes with the job is added stress of working at night. Whatever the negatives of this job. The plus side is suddenly the rise of young Indians who are confident, connected and dreamers. Wall Street journal has also done a nice article on Indian Call Center workers too.
There is more to those people than just cheap labour.

I guess some kind of regulation should be done. Why do people crib about outsourcing ? I guess a more pragmatic study should be done as to why the companies are resorting to outsourcing. Thanks for posting this piece. Like some other fellow-Indians pointed out before, the over-reaction and hatred expressed in some of the postings here do not reflect the view of the India community as a whole. That’s not to say that the community is not outraged by this behavior by public personalities … but there is obviously a more civilized and effective method in bringing these 2 to task, than sink to their levels!

IMHO – The unwritten code of conduct that artists ought to adhere to in public broadcasting, should be uniform for people of all races. Minorities feel they could get away with making racial slurs, just because they are minorities and so-called “oppressed folks”. It’s ironic but there are many who have made careers out of this with limited talent!

I want to ensure some of the Indians who have come to these pages that, just as Star & Buc Wild are not reflective of the DJ community at large, Americans in general are NOT reflective of an anti-Indian bias. Certainly not where I live. If you're referring to racial profiling, I should point out that in any nation, there's an important distinction between a nation's government and a nation's people.

And thanks, neurojava, for the leads. However, keep in mind the following will probably produce results:

1. Star & Buc will be broadcasting on WWPR in New York. This is where their show will be. Writing into the Philly station is fine, but if your goal is to get these guys off the air, send your missives that way.

2. Advertisers. If someone in New York listens to Star & Buc, make a list of who advertises during the show. This is the most palpable way to cripple the station. In some cases, an advertiser buys a bloc and the advertising director programs it among X number of times a day during several peak listening hours. So the advertiser may not be completely aware that his business is being sold during the Star & Buc Wild Show. If he is, however, he may not wish to associate himself with a personality who preaches hate.

3. Neurojava is right on the money about sending letters to newspapers and journals. In fact, Devalina Guha-Roy's efforts were what got this into the Philly Inquirer.

I do empathize the Customer support person, Teena, but I don't think she handled the situation as good as some of you think she did.

1) Well, from the voice, even a retard could’ve easily made out that it was a male caller, why did she have to call him “M’am” and that too, TWICE!
2) She could not understand what he was saying and at the same time did not want to make him repeat, probably because she knew from the voice that he was pissed and hence handled the call in a procedural way just like she would’ve done with 100 other callers whom she would’ve spoken to.

While Teena’s employers sympathize her position and give her a week’s off, they should also not forget to give her a friendly warning about the way she handled the call.

But given the fact that the call, by itself was a Prank, we can safely ignore that part.

In the US, you’ll find the whites and Blacks abusing each other and the Indians and other ethnic groups in a more cruel way compared to which, this is nothing. It’s trivial and I think u guys should ignore this and get back to work.

Such is the nature of a free forum. Please understand that when we write things like what the Pragmatist wrote we conveniently forget some basic facts.

1. From what I have gathered, the owner is not Indian. Yet he was effected enough to blog this topic here. When we generalize and use epithets like "Racist American" etc., ultimately what we are doing is lowering the force of our argument. So please refrain from using such language.

2. Ultimately, while some of us might think that this is a reflection of a greater social problem - fact is that people such as the RJ are in a vast minority. Most people are decent regular folks who would be outraged if they were to read about this incident. So please dont get race/nationality into this. I would accept the argument that this would not have happened to a call center person in say Ireland but lets face it - the incident itself is an exception than a rule.

3. Ultimately, if rather than raving ourselves out of breath we want to achieve something so that the people responsible are held accountable - espousing "violence against violence" isnt going to solve anything. We need to get out - talk to your community, write to the FCC ( yes, it will work if we get large number of complaints in ), write to newspapers, talk to the sponsors like Ed mentioned. But please dont go ploselytzying about non-issues.

This was taken up on Rediff.com also and sadly this is an attitude that my call center friends tell me is very common with Americans. The point here is though that this was caught on tape on Radio.. and esp for these radio heads who have nothing but hate on their mind, they probably don't know that the American bead manufacturing company has outsourced their calls to India, and so if he has a problem then he should have it with that company
So Star prolly hates his own country's governance for transfering jobs out to another country.

But this attitude of a few Americans is well known all over the world - that they have a problem with the rest of the world
- no wonder they are being attacked for the fault of a few dumbheads
- and if this continues to be the case, then people like Star and whoever the other Wild one is, will pay for it eventually.

The sensible thing here is for the Radio to ban such stupid characters from spreading their hate message and keep it to themselves and bring out some positive ways to deal with it. But unfortunately if they have been signed for bringing in money, they will not be banned...

ClearChannel has been the target of a lot of malpractices I believe 'cos I hear it's name pop up every now and then and they also have tried to answer these allegations on their website.

Hope there is enough sensitivity in this country for what they are being accused of and how they need to be more embracing in their views...

I heard the recoreded version of a power 99fm morning show where a call was made to India for a "white girls quick beads". The DJ not only used filthy language against the sales person which was outrageously racist act, the more disturbing is that everyone in the station was enjoying it.
Something like this is intolerable in free country like America. If
they have any issue with outsourcing of jobs I am sure this is not the right way of saying that. This is one of the meanest way of using a public medium for which we all pay taxes.

Many second-generation Indian Americans and other Asian Americans are among the most significant consumers of hip-hop and R&B music, and African American culture in general. Indians, Asians and Latino youth often find an affinity to African-American culture because they feel marginalized by the mainstream American culture which is decidedly more Eurocentric. They should be aware of this ESPECIALLY in the Tri-State area where their numbers are large. Big deal - what is the fuss about? So what if two DJs found it funny to take off on outsourcing and spew some venom at a call center operator? I am an Indian living in the US, proud of my roots, and never hesitating to identify with where I am from. The fact that two DJs among the thousands in the whole country acted in a rather puerile manner for humor, does not make the RJs, the radio station, or Americans racist.

American humor and the tolerance with it when pushing the edge of the envelope has been rather unique. When I was working for a call center here, we used to market products of a Houston,TX based company.

Getting tough people on the line was expected. I also have got some amazingly nice people to talk to, who gave their numbers and invited me to come over in the future.

But, I guess the toughies make a more lasting impression. When they get nasty , they really stir our emotions. Where we come from, or which country do we belong to does not bear any impact on the product we are selling or marketing.

But I guess, this is tough to understand for some of the "Westerners".

This is a sensitive issue to most Westerners, but the way an employee was abused racially doing her job is unpardonable. Its not funny .. Its your own loss. Indians excel in every field appx. 30% of NASA staff consists of INDIANS/INDIAN origins, INDIANS are big & important part of US silicon valley (from hotmail to sun micro systems), INDIANS in America are leading USA into nano-technology in big way. INDIANS & Chinese (especially) dominate research done in universities [primary source of development & research for all big defense companies and DOD]. We as individuals are progressing very well but collectively we are not able to do anything bcos we are still having the hangover of being ruled we should get out of that mindset. We must participate in US politics especially second generation INDIANS in USA so we gain political clout like the JEWISH community we should look at the JEWISH community and try to learn from them. THE BOTTOM LINE is MONEY RESPECTS MONEY, STRENGTH RESPECTS STRENGTH. So if we keep idle and keep whining we will be standing we are even after a century.

Hey when I say americans its not directed to all americans in general. I have lot of american friends white and aferican americans and all of them are very decent, friendly and nice people.
